In the picturesque Cornish seaside village of Mousehole, Maggie and Ryan are busy running Robbins’ Fish and Chip Shop. They love nothing more than a cup of tea, a nice slice of cake… and solving a murder mystery.
But Maggie and Ryan weren’t expecting to find a dead body in the castle on St Michael’s Mount, a famous island known for its causeway that disappears under water at high tide.

Already searching for a local youth, Mitch, who’s been missing for three weeks, Maggie and Ryan fear the worst. Then when a fishing boat is stolen, the detectives begin to suspect that all three mysterious events are somehow connected…

Has Mitch found himself in at the deep end? And can the amateur sleuths solve their latest case before the truth is left out at sea?

Don’t miss book 3 in the Fish and Chip Shop Detective Agency Series, perfect for fans of Fiona Leitch and Peter Boland – available to pre-order now!

As they establish their new venture as private detectives, while also running Robbins’ Fish and Chip Shop, Maggie and Ryan embark upon a quest to find teenager, Mitch Ashley – a young man who loves to sit at the local harbour and watch the boats go by.

However, this isn’t their only case. Ryan – with the help of his friend Harry (a spritely pensioner who dreams of being James Bond) – is keeping a careful eye on a man called Tony Prentice; trying to find out if he’s gambling away his wife’s life savings.

Then, when a murder case drops into Maggie’s lap (almost literally) –  the pressure is on; sending her to St Michael’s Mount and Ryan to the Penryn university campus at Falmouth.

The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives, are well and truly on the map.

Many thanks to everyone who has supported the series so far. I hope you enjoy my latest offering.

Book 4’s title will be announced soon – and any minute now, I’ll start to write Book 5!

EXTRACT: (From Chapter Two)

‘Linda.’ Maggie got to her feet. ‘Can we get you a drink?’ ‘A hot chocolate would be lovely. Thank you.’

‘I’ll fetch it.’ Ryan stood up. ‘Cream and marshmallows?’ ‘Just plain, please.’

Maggie noticed their client’s hunched shoulders and bowed head as she sank onto the bench. ‘I’m assuming you’ve not heard from your nephew?’

‘Nothing.’ Linda looked up. ‘I hope I’m worrying over nothing, but I’ve got this feeling I can’t shake. Something is wrong.’

‘Feelings like that should never be ignored.’

‘That’s what I thought. If I did nothing, and Mitch was in trouble …’

‘You’d never forgive yourself.’ Maggie nodded sympa-thetically.

‘James, my brother and Mitch’s dad, thinks I’m fussing because my husband is dead and not around to annoy.’

‘That’s a bit harsh.’

‘His wife Angela walked out on him and Mitch five years ago. It hit James hard.’ Linda looked drawn. ‘He never used to say such cruel things. I try to cut him some slack, but sometimes …’

As Ryan returned, a mug of hot chocolate in hand, Maggie opened her notebook. ‘We’ll do everything we can to find Mitch, but we can’t promise success.’

‘I appreciate your candour.’ Linda placed her palms on the table. ‘What would you like to know first?’

‘Let’s start with the basics.’ Maggie removed the lid from her pen. ‘Mitch’s full name, age and address.’

‘Mitchell Ashley. He’s nineteen, and he lives with his father at 9 Alma Road, Penzance.’

As Maggie wrote down Linda’s responses, Ryan took over the questioning. ‘Is he working or at college? University?’

‘Unemployed. Failed his A levels last year.’ Linda wiped the back of her hand over her eyes. ‘Mitch always did okay at school. He’s practical rather than academic, but he still got eight GCSEs – all Cs. He was disappointed not to get a few Bs, but I remember saying the Cs stood for consistent. Cheered him up … that’s when he decided to stay on at school to do A levels in the sixth form.’

‘He went to the local academy?’ When Linda nodded, Maggie ventured, ‘You mentioned his mum left five years ago.’ ‘Things had been bad between Angela and James for a while, but they kept trying for Mitch’s sake. I’ll be the first to admit that James is not always easy to be around. One day

Angela just upped and left. Without Mitch.’ ‘Do you know why she left him behind?’

‘I don’t, Maggie. Maybe she just wanted a clean break. Or she may have thought it was best for Mitch to have a stable home with his GCSEs coming up.’

‘But to leave your teenage son …’ Ryan left his sentence hanging in the air. ‘Can I ask what you meant when you said James isn’t easy to be around?’

‘Short temper. Not good at holding down a job. Consequently, money’s always tight. I did wonder if Angela’d found someone easier to live with – but I’ve no evidence of that.’

‘What does James think?’

‘He’s too angry to think. My brother has never come to terms with his wife leaving him. In his heart, I’m sure he knows he treated her badly – I can’t decide if he’s broken-hearted or simply furious with her or himself, or both.’ Linda let out a heavy sigh. ‘James started to drink too much as well, making him even more morose. And alcohol tends to inflame his temper further.’

‘I see.’ Maggie found herself wondering if Mitch had gone away to escape his father’s ire.

Changing the direction of the interview, Ryan asked, ‘What does Mitch look like?’

‘Short ginger hair, sprinkle of freckles. Here.’ Linda opened her phone. ‘I’ve got a picture. I’ll WhatsApp it over.’ Maggie and Ryan found themselves looking at a boy who was entirely average. Average height, average appearance, average clothing – black jeans and white T-shirt. His only distinctive feature was his red hair.

‘Is there anything else about him we should know? Regional accent? Left-handed? Only ever wears Nikes? That sort of thing?’

Linda shook her head at Ryan. ‘Sounds local, no handy limp or anything, right-handed and he wears New Balance trainers; like almost everyone else these days.’

Ryan glanced down at his own feet, encased in black New Balances. ‘Could we have his telephone number and email address? You never know, he might answer if he doesn’t recognise the number.’

Linda took the pen Maggie offered her and jotted them down in her notebook. ‘You think he might be avoiding family, rather than having gone missing.’

‘It’s an angle we should consider. It’s possible he just needed a break from his dad.’

‘To be honest, that’s what James thinks. But why hide from me? We’re close – at least, I thought we were.’ Holding her hot chocolate to her chest, Linda went on, ‘When Angela left, Mitch tried hard. I suppose he felt he had to, in case his dad left him too. He threw himself into his studies, was helpful, and – if I’m honest – Mitch was the one James relied on, not the other way around. And that was as big a prob-lem as his mum deserting him – although James can’t, or won’t, see that. Mitch gradually became resentful of being the only one who did the cooking and cleaning. But, over the last six months, Mitch simply stopped trying. At home and at school. While he and I remained close, Mitch and James drifted apart. They’re like people in a house-share rather than father and son.’

Maggie jotted down a few more notes. ‘When did you last see Mitch?’

‘Almost three weeks ago. I was trying to get them to talk without arguing, so I invited Mitch and James over for a barbecue on Bank Holiday Monday. I was amazed they came, to be honest.’

Ryan opened his phone’s calendar. ‘That would have been the twenty-fifth of August.’

‘That’s right.’

‘Who else was there?’

‘Just James, Mitch, me – and Bryn of course.’ Linda smiled as she mentioned her son’s name. ‘It was nice. A bit strained sometimes between James and Mitch, but there were no fights or anything.’

‘And when was the last time Bryn saw him?’

‘Same time as I did. Mitch and James left our house together at around seven that evening.’ Linda took a sip of her drink. ‘James, however, last saw Mitch on Saturday the sixth of September. He dropped Mitch off near Penzance railway station at about eight in the evening, after they’d been to the supermarket.’

Maggie glanced at the date on her phone. ‘It’s the fourteenth today, so that’s a total of eight days since a family member has seen him. Any phone or email contact since then?’

‘Nothing. He told his dad he was off for a drink with his mates, but Mitch only has one friend that we know of. A lad known as Zip.’

‘Zip?’ Maggie frowned. ‘And his real name?’ ….

Blurbing it: The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives

The clock is well and truly ticking towards the publication of the third book in my latest cosy crime series: The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives.

While each of my Cornwall based novels can be read as standalone stories, they are at their best when read in order. There’s still time to catch up with the story so far!

The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives

Forty-eight-year-old Maggie is a lover of puzzles. When she’s not working at Robbins’ Fish and Chip Shop, she can be found on her sofa, nursing a cup of tea and solving the latest mystery thrown at the detectives in Death in Paradise, Midsommer Murders and more. Maggie finds an unlikely friend in Ryan, a recent graduate who has just moved to Mousehole and is trying to figure out what to do with his life. Together, they serve up the best fish and chips Cornwall has to offer, with an occasional helping of mystery solving on the side.

The Setting

Mousehole is a picturesque fishing village in Cornwall, known for its scenic harbour, winding streets, and tiny sandy beach. It’s also home to Robbins’ Fish and Chip Shop, the only chippy in town. Tourists and locals alike enjoy a battered cod whilst admiring the calm waterfront. Mr Robbins, the owner, is notoriously private – no one knows much about him. Perhaps that’s another mystery for our Fish and Chip Shop Detectives to solve…

When a body is found by the harbour, shock ripples through the village. And as Ryan was the last person seen talking to the victim, he becomes the number one suspect in the investigation.

Mysteries at The Robin Hood Club

My very first #cosycrime novel, Manuscript Mysteries at The Robin Hood Club, was published in 2024. At the present time, I’m editing the second novel in the series into shape.

BLURB:  Book One of The Robin Hood Club Series

A brand new cosy crime series! Welcome to the Robin Hood Club!

There’s great excitement when a previously undiscovered Robin Hood ballad manuscript, Robin Hood and the Carter, turns up in the same town as the Robin Hood Club’s latest fan convention.

But the Robin Hood Club’s special guest – Harriet, “Hari”, Danby, writer and creator of the hit TV series, Return to Sherwood – can’t help thinking the discovery is rather too coincidental.

With her best friend, Dot, at her side, Hari finds herself taken out of her quiet writing life and catapulted into a world of enthusiastic fans, actors egos, and jealous fellow authors.

As the Robin Hood Club event gets underway, speculation about the new ballad grows… and then Hari notices that one of the Robin Hood Club’s most devoted followers has gone missing…

***

You don’t need to be a Robin Hood fan to enjoy this book, it’s written for all #cosycrime readers. But if you have a fondness for cosy crime, cookies, and Britain’s favourite medieval outlaw, then this is definitely the read for you!

Available in paperback, eBook format, and on Kindle Unlimited from: Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon CA | Amazon AU

I’ve been overwhelmed by the kind comments and the kind reviews the ebook version of Manuscript Mysteries has prompted.

Here are a couple of the lovely things folk have said over on Amazon.co.uk

5.0 out of 5 stars

Excellent cosy crime in a familiar setting

I really enjoyed the story, well paced, plotted and with a well hidden but believable ‘villain’ culminating in a satisfying ending. What I particularly enjoyed was how well the author captured the convention setting, having been to a few of them, it felt believable, the right mix of characters, eccentrics, celebrities and excitement these events have which made the story so relatable. Looking forward to the second book and the further development of the many interesting characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars

Thoroughly enjoyable read.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 May 2024

This book was the perfect escapist read for me. I’ve always been a huge Robin of Sherwood fan. I found the combination of medieval history with a modern day narrative AND a tantalising mystery utterly absorbing. Can’t wait for the next one.

I highly recommend this book.

The next Robin Hood Club story takes the convention to the Wiltshire city of Salisbury, where Lee, the star of Hari’s television show, Return to Sherwood, is joined by his newest c0-star, Toby Greene: otherwise known as John Little…

The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives by Jenny Kane

FIRST 500 WORDS:

Chapter One:  Monday, June 2nd

Maggie wrapped a serving of fish and chips in paper and passed the aromatic package across the counter. There was something about her latest customer that made her give him an encouraging smile. He seemed lost.

‘Here you go, me’andsome. Best fish and chips for miles.’

‘Thanks.’

Offering up the card machine so that he could pay, Maggie nodded towards the rucksack at his feet. ‘On your holidays?’

‘No. Well, sort of.’ He shrugged, the movement giving him the air of a scarecrow swaying in the wind.

Judging the lad to be of a similar age to her daughter, Izzie, Maggie experienced a maternal pang. ‘Sort of?’

‘Yeah.’ He threw her a shy grin as he turned away, giving the shop door a firm tug as he closed it behind him.

As soon as he’d left the warm environment of Robbins’ Fish and Chip Shop, Maggie, found herself speculating about her latest customer.

Student maybe… Here on holiday with his mates after his exams, but they’ve had a row and he’s taking some time out… Picking up a cloth and a bottle of sterilizing spray, she wiped droplets of vinegar off the counter. Or he’s fallen out with his girlfriend and he’s after a bit of headspace.

Smiling to herself, Maggie pictured her daughter joining in her musings. She and Izzie had always enjoyed people watching; guessing what other people were like as they sipped coffee in the local café, or sat on the harbour wall, observing Mousehole’s nonstop supply of tourists as they meandered by.

Checking the time on the large, fish-shaped wall clock above the counter, Maggie headed to the front door and turned the ‘open’ sign to ‘closed’, before calling through to the office beyond the serving counter. ‘Mr Robbins, I’m closing up.’

The short grunt that greeted this news, was all she needed to remove her apron, unpin the white boater from her head, and hang them both on a hook inside the office door.

‘I’ll see you at six.’ Maggie waited for the second grunt of acknowledgement she knew her boss would give her before she left.

Eric Robbins – known to everyone as Mr Robbins, (with an emphasis on the mister, as though he felt very protective of the title), was seated in his usual position. Hunched forward, his palatial buttocks wedged into a blue plastic chair, he had a pair of black-rimmed designer glasses hooked over his cauliflower ears. The 1960’s design of the spectacles served to emphasise, rather than diminish, the line of his repeatedly broken nose. One hand rubbed continuously at his stubbly chin, while the other scrolled through whatever it was he was studying on the tablet propped up in front of him. He wore a crisp white apron and a white fabric boater, despite only rarely stirring himself to interact with the frying of anything, let alone to engage in conversation with a customer.

In ten years of working as Mr Robbins’ assistant in…

When a body is found by the harbour, shock ripples through the village. And as Ryan was the last person seen talking to the victim, he becomes the number one suspect in the investigation.

Maggie is certain that her new colleague had nothing to do with the murder, so swaps her apron for a magnifying glass, and starts to investigate herself.

Can Maggie prove Ryan’s innocence and reel in the killer, before they strike again?
