The moment she arrived Kit spotted Jack at their usual table. His black leather jacket was thrown across the back of the wooden chair on which he was perched. He didn’t look right somehow. Normally he’d be virtually reclining, a flirty smirk playing across his face as he watched her walk towards him. Today Jack seemed pale and almost twitchy. Kit’s stomach turned over; what if he was ill? It was a possibility, especially in his world. She instantly told herself off for such a stereotypical thought, but a voice still nagged. Something was wrong.

It was a relief to come to her turn in the queue. Paying for a large Americano and two Chelsea buns (it looked as though they might need extra sugar); Kit took up her tray and headed towards Jack.

‘Do you think it’s possible to love someone, love them very much, and still know in your heart that it will never work between you?’ The sentence exploded from Jack’s mouth like bullets from a gun; not even waiting for Kit to take her coat off before blurting out what was on his mind.

‘Bloody hell, Jack! That’s a heavy question for a Monday lunchtime.’

‘Sorry…’ Instantly abashed, Jack seemed almost ashamed.

Too late, Kit realised that in her relief that Jack hadn’t announced he was sick; she had made a huge error in making light of his question. Such soul searching was so out of character that she’d been taken by surprise. He’d probably been building up to asking that all night.

Amazed, Kit watched as Jack stood up, ignoring his drink and cake, grabbed his jacket, and walked out. He’d always had a taste for the dramatic gesture, but this was different. Kit sat where she was, fighting her natural instinct to run after him. Sipping her coffee, she ran his words through her head. Who did he love hopelessly? Maybe he wasn’t referring to himself at all? Kit snorted into her coffee; of course it was about him. It was always about him. Perhaps he’d fallen for a married man who wouldn’t give up the more traditional part of his life? Or maybe … No, don’t be ridiculous … Kit quashed a treacherous thought. Picking up her phone, she fired off a text.

Come drink ur coffee. I’m sorry, u took me by surprise. K x

Jack’s drink was stone cold by the time Kit had given up on a reply.

Employment– was a business growth advisor in Scotland, before leaving her job in search of a new life in England.

Shrugging off her khaki jacket, Amy bent to pick up the pile of post that lay waiting on her doormat. As her hand reached to retrieve the small brown package half-buried beneath some junk mail, Amy froze. She knew that handwriting. She also had a funny feeling that she knew what was going to be inside.

But why return it now, after all these years?

The poorly-wrapped parcel broke open as her fingers fumbled at the sticky tape, and a music cassette slipped into her hands. The cover was unmarked, just as it had been when he’d taken it from her. Amy stared, disbelieving, the blood draining from her already pale face…

Fifteen years ago Amy Crane was a shy but happy-go-lucky archaeology student.

Fourteen years ago Amy met Jack.

Thirteen years ago Amy ran away. 600 miles away. From England to Scotland.

Now, spurred on by an unexpected arrival in the post, Amy realises she doesn’t want to hide any more.

Fed up with her job, missing her university friends, and disappointed in her own feeble behaviour, Amy finds the courage to face the ghost of her past and forge a future.

Armed with her mantra, New Life, new job, new home- which she repeats to herself over and over again, Amy Crane leaves her job, leaves her rented flat, and with more courage than she’s shown in years, heads south…

Here Comes Jenny…

How exciting!! My first blog on this, my brand new web site!!

It isn’t just the web site that’s new- my pen name is all new and shiny as well!

For the past 8 years I’ve been writing under an entirely different name, creating an entirely different sort of story.

So, you may have come across my work before- under the guise of Kay Jaybee- I’ve written 14 solo books, and had over 80 short stories published in others. I love writing as Kay- she is very much braver than I am, and it is such fun taking on her persona and weave tales of erotic romance, BDSM, and voyeurism.

However, I always planned to widen my literary horizons beyond erotica- but until now I’ve had neither the time nor the nerve to try! It’s a daunting thing trying to get a new book published, even if you already have a proven track record in your field. To jump the fence and branch into a different field altogether is a bit like starting all over again.

When I heard I was to have my first contemporary romance, Another Cup of Coffee, published, it felt every bit as exciting as it did when my very first erotic book was taken back in 2008! Just check out my gorgeous new cover!!!

ACOC- cover

The plot line for Another Cup of Coffee– which is more a story of modern friendship with romance, than a romantic story- has been simmering in the back of my head for years. In fact it first hit the paper in a very rough form before I’d ever dreamt up my first erotic tale- but I just didn’t have the skills or the confidence to do anything with it. But now, after serving my writers apprenticeship in the highly competitive erotica market, I decided I would throw caution to the wind and send my manuscript to a publisher.

With every expectation of being rejected, I waited- and made myself forget all about it, throwing myself into my next erotic novel- only to have my dream come true 3 months later- a yes from Accent Press!!!!

And so, very soon now, you’ll be able to buy my new novel!!! Think comfort food, think book chocolate, think something to curl up with on a sun lounger, or in front of the fire (either could apply during a British summer!!), while you get lost in the life of Miss Amy Crane, her friends, and the ghost from her past…

You can check out the burb on my ‘Books’ page- and there will be more details soon…
