Opening Lines: Meet Me At Wisteria Cottage by Teresa F Morgan

Today I’m delighted to welcome fellow author, friend, and co-member of the Wiltshire RNA chapter, Teresa Morgan, to my place to share the first 500 words of Meet me at Wisteria Cottage.

Over to you Teresa…

Thanks Jenny for inviting me onto your Opening Lines blog feature. I’ve taken the first 500 words from my latest novel, Meet Me At Wisteria Cottage. It’s a contemporary romance novel based in the idyllic setting of Cornwall, and as you can see, my hero and heroine start off on the wrong foot with each other…

Here are my first 500 words. Enjoy!

Maddison Hart threw her bag on the passenger seat, turned the key in the ignition and, checking the pavement was clear, reversed off the driveway. A bad memory reminded her to glance in her wing mirror just in time. She was about to hit her neighbour’s pickup truck on the opposite side of the road – again. She slammed the brakes and cursed. She’d only just had her damn brake light fixed.

“Bloody idiot,” she said, screwing up her face.

Why did he park it there, on the road, and not on his driveway? It was big enough!

He always seemed to be parked there when she wanted to reverse off her drive, too! Damn the man.

Her neighbour, wearing only a pair of knee-length khaki shorts, and busy putting some tools into the back of the black pickup, smirked.

Oh, crap, he’d heard her too, with her window partially down. Sod it, he’d been living here three months, and now it was getting annoying.  She pressed the button, and lowered her window further. She would not be intimidated by his bare chest and muscles.

“Mr…” she glanced at the stickers reading ‘Tudor Landscapes’ along the truck’s side, “Mr Tudor,” she said more assertively, “could you not park your truck right there?”

“It’s Harry.”

“Okay, Harry,” she sniped, “could you please not park your truck right there.” Everything about him, his whole demeanour, infuriated Maddy.

“Why?”

“I nearly hit it – again!”

“What do you mean again?” He glanced at the truck, rubbing his hand along the paintwork.

“I said nearly.” She lied. Last time she had clonked it, but it had done more damage to her car than his.

“It’s easy, look in your mirrors as you reverse off your drive, lady.”

Maddy took a deep breath, her teeth clamped together and dramatically swished her strawberry blonde hair off her shoulders before choosing her next words. “It’s awkward whether I look in my mirrors or not.”

“Drive slower then.”

Maddy refrained from growling with frustration, instead she gripped the steering wheel tighter. The man was obviously too arrogant to listen. “It doesn’t matter how fast I go. I’m used to reversing off my drive, hassle free. The people who lived in the house before you never parked on the road. They used their driveway.”

“Then reverse onto your drive, so you can see what you’re doing when you leave, if it’s so difficult.”

“It’s not easy to reverse onto my drive either, with your monstrosity of a truck in the road.” The road was too narrow, as it only led to a handful of houses.

“Maybe you should own a smaller car if you can’t handle it.”

Deep breath, Maddy. One, two, three… She did not like his smug expression, and wished he wasn’t six feet tall and built like a marine, standing there baring his tanned torso, because she wanted to wipe that smirk off his face. Bastard. She hated smug bastards.

“Are you implying I can’t drive?” Her eyes

A Cornish Escape

After her house is set on fire and her love life is left in tatters, Maddy Hart can’t believe her luck when a friend offers her the temporary haven of Wisteria Cottage. Overlooking the turquoise blue waters of the Cornish coast, the fresh air feels like a fresh start for her and her broken heart.

Peeking out of the cosy cottage windows, Maddy’s surprised to see her gorgeous but insufferable neighbour Harry Tudor has been employed to landscape the garden. But as the wisteria winding its way around the cottage begins to bloom, an unlikely friendship starts to blossom…

Teresa F Morgan writes contemporary romance. Her debut novel ‘Plus One is a Lucky Number’ was published in August 2013 by HarperImpulse. This novel, having gone through the RNA’s New Writer Scheme lead to Teresa being a contender for the Romantic Novelist Association’s Joan Hessayon New Writer’s Award in 2014. One Fine Day, her second novel, was published by HarperImpulse in January 2015 and her third novel, Meet Me At Wisteria Cottage was published in April 2017.

Teresa originates from Surrey, moving to Weston-super-Mare in 1998. She now lives with her two sons and a budgie called Rio. Family holidays in Cornwall have lead to the scenic Cornish coastline and the city of Bristol being the back drop for her novels.

She’s at her happiest baking cakes, putting proper home cooked dinners on the table (whether the kids eat them or not), reading a good romance, or sitting at her PC emptying her thoughts onto the screen.

Teresa loves writing contemporary romance, stories with a touch of escapism and creating heroes readers will fall in love with.

My First Time: Teresa Morgan

The last two weeks have flown by, and it’s time for another interview in my ‘First Time’ series. Today I’m delighted to welcome Teresa Morgan to chat about her first publishing experience.

Over to you Teresa…

First Time

Can you remember writing the first story you actually wanted to write, rather than those you were forced to write at school? What was it about?

To be honest, I didn’t realise I wanted to write until ten years ago. I’m a late starter! I started reading Fanfiction, but when I couldn’t find the stories I wanted to read, I started writing my own Fanfiction, so that I could write a romance between two characters that wasn’t in the show. A friend encouraged me to write it and put it out there.

What was your first official publication?

Plus One is a Lucky Number was my first novel to be published in 2013 by Harper Impulse, a Harper Collins imprint. My novel is more Rom Com/Chick Lit/Contemporary romance. There is some sex in it, because as I was writing it, towards the end of the book, I thought if I don’t give the reader something I’m going to leave them frustrated.

What affect did that have on your life?

I had achieved my goal. Knowing that your writing is good enough to be published by a publisher is the best feeling in the world, albeit still worrying. But for the first time in my life I feel I know what I want to do. I’ve found my career. I now feel so much more satisfied in life. I have to work to have a regular income but the writing makes it feel easier to endure.

Does your first published story reflect your current writing style?

It does and it doesn’t. I write my stories as they come, and hopefully I’m improving my ‘voice’. But they all come under the contemporary romance bracket really. Even when I was writing fanfiction, I was putting romance into it, plus some action. I suppose with Plus One is a Lucky Number being branded a romantic comedy – I did have to check with my editor if she thought the book funny – I’m conscious that my other novels should contain some humour. But I try to do it naturally, lacing the my writing with some of my sense of humour, so it’s quite subtle, and not deliberate, if that makes sense?

What are you working on at the moment?

Book three, working title: To Love Again. Harry is an ex-fireman and is supposed to be my reluctant hero, but I think the firefighter in him just can’t stop him helping people, so he’s turned out to be less reluctant than hoped. Maddy is my heroine, and the book starts with them very much hating one another as neighbours, but when Maddy’s house catches fire, Harry comes to her rescue and lets her stay at his house, and their relationship develops from there.

Just a boy standing in front of a girl…

Actor Steve Mason has it all … gorgeous looks, the perfect starlet girlfriend hanging on his arm and his name on every Hollywood producer’s lips. That is, until it turns out the ‘perfect girl’ is actually a perfect PR stunt! Dumped and with his name plastered across every tabloid headline, Steve decides to head home to England, questioning if he’ll ever find a woman who genuinely loves him for who he is, and not just his place on the Sexiest Man Alive list.

It’s been fifteen long years since Ruby last saw her big brother – but the new LA version of Steve complete with designer wardrobe, California tan and an American accent is too much to bear – Ruby hardly recognises him and decides it’s time to get her brother back!

With Ruby’s help, Steve goes undercover as he plays the part of a regular guy who leads a regular life. And then one perfectly fine, ordinary day he meets lovely, funny, down-to-earth Lydia. But when Hollywood comes calling, will Steve be able to leave both Lydia and his little sister behind?

Interview with Teresa F. Morgan: One Fine Day

Today I’m interviewing fellow writer, Teresa Morgan, about her latest book, One Fine Day.

Time to pop the kettle on, and enjoy five minutes with your feet up, while you join in our chatter…

coffee cups

What inspired you to write your book?

One Fine Day is inspired by a mix of things really. I’ve always been fascinated how celebrities can just split up. Especially those that get together, marry and divorce in the space of a year – or less! Having been through a divorce, I know it’s not easy, but us ‘normal’ folk have the financial worry which makes our decision to break up harder, whereas if both parties are rich and famous, they don’t have that financial insecurity to face. And so I wonder if this lessens their effort to work at a relationship. Also, I love Superman/Clark Kent and wondered what sort of person would need to go under a disguise to find their perfect partner… and decided a heart-throb actor (who looks a lot like Bradley Cooper) would be a perfect candidate.

One Fine Day

Do you model any of your characters after people you know? If so, do these people see themselves in your characters?

Steve’s sister, Ruby, in One Fine Day is bossy and swears a lot… she’s very much like me. I’m not sure I like to make my characters like people I know… I might steal a name but usually I’ll use characters off the television to be safe. A fictional character based on another fictional character.

Which Point of View do you prefer to write in and why?

I prefer writing in third person so that I can fluctuate between the hero and the heroine. I always do this with a scene change though, so the reader isn’t hopping from one head to another. But I do like to give the reader the hero’s perspective and not always the heroine’s. In fact, One Fine Day is predominately the hero’s point of view.

Do you prefer to plot your story or just go with the flow?

Writing romance you know there has to be a happy ending. I usually have ideas of things I need to put into my story, but I am probably a bit of a “just go with the flow” type writer. I’m not very good at plotting my story, I just want to get on with writing it.

What is your writing regime?

Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays are my free days, so I try to write in those days when the boys are at school. I’m giving myself a target of around 2000 words a week… but really, I like to achieve a 1000 words a day. I also have to fit in exercise, housework, and catching up with friends, but I’m trying to do more during the day so that evenings I relax and can use as my social media and blogging time.

Bio

Author bio

I live in sunny Weston-super-Mare, trying to hold onto my Surrey accent where I was born and bred. For years I persevered with boring jobs, until my two boys joined my nest. In an attempt to find something to work around them, and to ensure I never endured full time boredom again, I found writing. I am at my happiest baking cakes, putting proper home cooked dinners on the table (whether the kids eat them or not), reading a good romance, or creating a touch of escapism with heroes readers will fall in love with.
