Guest Post from Joanna Campbell: How I approach my writing.

I’m delighted to welcome Joanna Campbell to my site today. This is a truly fascinating blog about her journey into the world of words and storytelling.

Eight years ago, after being a housewife for many years, I completed a proofreading course, but proved spectacularly unsuccessful at securing any work. No one wanted to hire ‘an inexperienced woman who had never worked in the industry and had merely read a couple of text books and done a few exercises’, one weary-sounding, hard-bitten publisher—quite rightly—told me.

However, I knew I wanted to work with words. I had always written poetry—and then a novel which I slid under a wardrobe and left to grow a cocoon of cobwebs—but felt drawn to the short story form because I had always loved reading them.

I had not yet learnt how to use a computer properly, having written the novel using voice-activated software, so the process of hauling myself into the twenty-first century and teaching myself new skills was hugely exciting.

After years away from the world of work, I couldn’t even pour water out of a boot with instructions on the heel, but I did begin to believe that, from my desk at home, I could try to reach people, or even touch just one person out there. It was—and still is—all about entertaining people with the written word.

I began writing stories for the women’s magazines and was given encouraging feedback for my earliest stories, but publication took a little longer. I didn’t mind the wait because I was expecting to try, try and try again. I was given helpful snippets of feedback when a story was judged a ‘near miss’ and I taught myself from those. Above all, I needed to find my own ‘voice’ as a writer, that ‘matchlessness’, or individuality, that has attracted me as a reader to my favourite authors over the years. I have an aversion to the concept of ‘genre’ and the obsession with marketable trends. I love reading anything which appeals as I browse through the bookshops or library, discovering wonderful authors regardless of their category or popularity.

I enjoy the writing process so much that publication is not the only goal. The greatest value comes from practising the craft, day in and day out, even crawling out of bed at four in the morning to make a start because I can hardly wait. (I learnt to type, although I am still slow and my daughters love to do impressions of me hunched over the keyboard and peering at the screen.) From day one, it was more about improving than succeeding, more about showing up every day than seeing my work in print. Once I began to believe in my writing, I began making sales.

Along the way, I also discovered short story competitions and have entered hundreds over the years. The thrill of reaching a shortlist never diminishes and when a story does not succeed—which happens often—I revise it and submit it elsewhere. Many of my stories have reached a shortlist after two or three attempts. One judge might not be enthralled by a story and place it on the ‘no’ pile, yet the same story could manage to captivate another judge and soar straight to the top.

When a story is rejected by a publication or is unplaced in a contest, I allow myself five minutes to wallow in disappointment. It is natural to feel a twinge of hurt and frustration when you have invested so much time and emotion into a creative piece and sent it away with great hope. However, there is no point in dwelling. Rejection is a brief setback, not a comment on the story’s worth, nor a personal rebuff, just an integral part of writerly life.

I have received enormous value from entering competitions. Not only have they brought me into contact with hundreds of supportive writers, many of whom have become friends, they have also secured me both a publishing contract and representation by a literary agent.

I entered my first novel, ‘Tying Down The Lion’ in a competition run by Cinnamon Press and it reached the top ten, narrowly missing the final five. This boosted my confidence and encouraged me to send it to independent publisher, Brick Lane, who took it on and released it in paperback last year. It went on to be longlisted in the Guardian’s ‘Not the Booker’ prize.

After one of my stories became a runner-up in the Ink Tears annual competition, I was informed that Ink Tears, who are great supporters of the art of short story-telling, were about to venture into publishing and did I have a collection they could take a look at? This was a dream come true for me, since I had a large number of stories with the unifying theme of ordinary lives slipping out of kilter, similar to the way a turn of the kaleidoscope alters our perception and causes a sense of disorder. As a result, ‘When Planets Slip Their Tracks’, my first collection of short stories, was published in January 2016 in a beautiful hardback edition, as are all the Ink Tears books.

When my story, ‘Upshots’, won the London Short Story Competition in 2015, one of the judges was the literary agent, Elise Dillsworth. When she offered to represent me, yet another dream come true. And although a little good luck does play its part when dreams become reality, I would strongly advocate submitting work regularly and writing consistently, every day if possible, in order to assist the magic bullet to hit the target.

The hardest part about writing is starting. I often procrastinate. My husband, when passing my desk on the way to his, has spotted me engrossed in articles about Tibetan bandits or the history of the Navel orange. I tell him they are for research, but I believe they are digressions. As soon as I have written a few words, I wonder why I felt the need to put it off.

The writing is definitely not the hard part, but thinking about writing is horrendous. That is the time the sting of self-doubt and thoughts of ‘shouldn’t I be mopping the floor/sending emails/tickling the cat/going for a walk in the fresh air instead?’ start to niggle. The answer is to swat these moments of insecurity away like wasps, get a grip and press on with it. After all, the worst that can happen is that I loathe every word and delete it all. But in the process, I will have learnt something about my writing in general and something specific about my work-in-progress. I will have made no tangible progress, but by discovering which aspects have not worked I will have taken a giant step forward. This is why I never keep a word count.

Although a tally can provide a motivational target, I prefer to aim for maximum satisfaction. After a less successful writing day, I would rather be dispirited by the humdrum quality of my writing—and aspire to improve it the next day—than by a number. Numbers carry no real meaning for me, no emotional pull, and I have no desire to feel I have fallen short of a numeric total. If I kept a tally, I might feel compelled to make good the shortfall the following day and in the rush to do so, might be tempted to sacrifice quality for quantity.

Maybe too many bad memories linger from school maths lessons of yesteryear. Long division tripped me up and the properties of a circle had me in flat spin. My maths teacher complained to my parents that whenever she chose me to respond to a question, I would be gazing into space. When I finally realised the whole class was waiting for me to speak, I would literally have to shake myself out of a daydream. Needless to say, I could never answer the question because I had no idea what she had asked. Hence I pursued languages rather than logarithms, vague daydreams rather than Venn diagrams. As one teacher put it on my end-of-year report, ‘Joanna has a perfect attendance record, but she isn’t always with us.’

I have always lived in my head and made things up. While I have never possessed the outward confidence I envy in others, a quiet sense of assurance lurks inside me. The East German novelist, Christa Wolf, talked of how “a deep pain or a deep concentration lights up the landscape within.”

I have learnt at last that it is valid to be a quiet person. (Dr Seuss lived in a bell-tower and was scared of meeting the children he wrote for.) However, when I was a cripplingly shy, withdrawn child, someone called me rude and anti-social. Wracked with guilt, I spent forty years trying to be extrovert and fun. I really suffered as an adult during the eighties when all the self-help books changed from showing how to build character to how to increase charisma. The workplace became a hotbed of role-play, teamwork and competition—and those spiteful clip-on earrings that really pinched.

Writing allows me to celebrate my shyness. I work ay my best alone, but it is only now I am older that I can take pride and pleasure in solitude. In my youth I assumed popularity equalled happiness and wished I could be one of the golden ones. I was mortified to be chosen last when the netball captain picked her team, favouring even the girl who broke her leg and still had the cast on. Very quick on her crutches, she was.

Now that writing has brought me greater self-esteem—not the publication part of it, but the act of writing itself—I tuck myself away and live in my own world without compunction. I am enjoying writing novels now, but impulses for short stories often take over. When this happens, I place the novel-in-progress to one side because these sudden ideas appear as if someone has cleared away a pile of earth and there they are, broken stories, like fragments of old china which urgently need me to piece them together.

Short stories have a special, tight rhythm and a need for every word to keep to the beat. They are raw moments in time, revealing snapshots of people frozen in a few pages. You leap straight into a short story, smashing its heart open in the first line to reveal its core, and end it with frayed edges—unanswered questions—left to drift.

Nabokov said: “The writer’s job is to get the main character up a tree, and then once they are up there, throw rocks at them.”

I must admit, when my characters are confronted with nightmarish problems, I relish the surge of power during the rock-hurling—I’m no shrinking violet then.

In the evenings, when my family ask about my day, I have, at various times, been able to confirm that I have given an old man with dementia a trip in a car without him leaving his living-room; have awakened Benito Mussolini’s mistress from the dead and transported her to Becontree station; and transmogrified a brash young salesman into a red-necked ostrich. I once wrote a story called ‘The Journey to Everywhere’—which is where I go every day—all from my desk in a corner of the living-room.

They say to write what you know, but I like to take what I know and extend it until it becomes something I don’t know. I try to let my mind reach all the way to the outer edge of my knowledge and then use my imagination to stretch further beyond that border until I am hanging my characters from a cliff by their fingertips—while forcing them to take in the view of course. There is nothing to match the sense of possibility that arrives when I reach the edge. It is the place where I meet myself as a stranger, so that I am not a part of the writing, only the infinite panoramas beyond me.

I think the characters are the most important part of story-telling. I let them drive the plot and never know what will happen until they show me. The disadvantage of working without an outline is that it can take time for me to locate the heart of the story or novel. I have to wait until I understand the protagonist and, until that happens, I am convinced it will never work and am always on the verge of giving up. It takes staying power—or sheer doggedness—but once I know who is taking me on the journey, then I am with them every step of the way and have the incomparable pleasure of discovering their story as it unfolds. I hope they can engage the reader in the same way and love to hear about the different nuances that others have found within—and between—the words.

Joanna is a full-time writer from the Cotswolds and her short stories have been published in literary magazines such as The New WriterWriters’ ForumThe Yellow Room and The Lampeter Review, and in anthologies from Cinnamon Press, Spilling Ink, Earlyworks Press, Unbound Press and Biscuit Publishing, as well as The Salt Anthology of New Writing 2013, both the 2013 and 2014 Rubery Book Award anthologies and the 2010 and 2013 Bristol Short Story Prize anthologies.

Shortlisted five times for the Bridport Prize and three times for the Fish Prize, she also came second in the 2011 Scottish Writers Association’s contest. In 2012 she was shortlisted in Mitchelstown Literary Society’s William Trevor/Elizabeth Bowen competition and runner-up in 2013.

Her stories have won the 2011 Exeter Writers competition, the 2013 Bath Short Story Award Local Prize and the 2015 London Short Story Prize.

As a student, Joanna lived in Germany for a year during the time of its division and was moved by the sorrow underlying the stoicism of the people she met there. The construction of literal and figurative walls, and specifically how the Berlin Wall altered the concept of home overnight, sowed the first seed for her debut novel. Reflecting both the suffering and the irrepressible spirit of ordinary people living in a country frozen by the Cold War, it began as a short story and grew into Tying Down The Lion, published by Brick Lane in 2015.

Ink Tears Press published her first short story collection, When Planets Slip Their Tracks, in January 2016.

Her second novel, Estuary Road, which is about the way our lives can unravel in a split second, is currently with her agent, Elise Dillsworth.

Nothing’s Forgotten: An Interview with #KOTA Producer Barnaby Eaton-Jones

I’m delighted to be interviewing the producer of  the brand new Robin of Sherwood audio production today (The Knights of the Apocalypse #KOTA) – Barnaby Eaton-Jones- today!

How did you get involved in #KOTA?

I was asked to co-produce by Simon Barnard, of Bafflegab Productions, as I’d been organising the 30th anniversary ‘Robin Of Sherwood’ celebration – The Hooded Man 2014, which made history by being the only event to have both Hooded Men together at the same time and on stage together being interviewed; Michael Praed and Jason Connery. It was I who liaised with Richard ‘Kip’ Carpenter’s estate and suggested we use the unproduced KOTA script, as well as asking all the surviving actors from the show whether they wanted to come on board. Sadly, Simon left the project in late 2015 and I become sole Producer and basically started the production again (re-casting, re-writing, booking new studios, finding a new audio company – Spiteful Puppet – and generally making sure that ITV and Kip’s estate didn’t pull the plug on it, which was very, very close to happening). It was all rather hectic but I think the production become stronger because of it.

Have you always like RH/RoS? You’re much too young to have watched RoS when it aired the first time around.

You flatter me! Ha. I am easily old enough to have watched it the first time round. When the show ended, I was hitting my teenage years, and so I recall it all with great clarity and loved every second of it. I think I’d always had a fascination with Robin Hood (I recall reading the ‘proper’ legend, which was anything but, that had been written by Enid Blyton – a simplified version of the most well-known tale – when I was young. But, Robin Of Sherwood was a different chalice of mead. It was rooted in the ’80s but yet seemingly tireless. It was rather ‘adult’ for a teatime adventure slot on ITV (there is talk in the first episode of Will Scarlet’s wife being raped by soldiers, hence his rather unhinged character and desire to fight the Normans). I eagerly awaited ‘Look-In’ (the TV guide for kids), that had a comic strip of the show in it and the odd article and I recall the confusion when Michael Praed’s Robin died and the next series saw the introduction of a new Hooded Man, in the form of Jason Connery’s Robert of Huntingdon. As I got older, I loved the fact that Kip had basically used the two most well-known legends for the outlaw – the first being a Saxon peasant, in the form of Robin of Loxley, and the second being a well-to-do song of an Earl, in the form of Robert of Huntingdon. Artistic leeway aside, with Kip’s interpretation featuring a regular Merry Man in the form of a Saracen called Nasir, I think his vision was pitch perfect for the show and I don’t believe there’s been one better before or since.

What’s your ‘real’ job?

My two little daughters will say it’s being a silly Daddy. I work from home, so I look after them. But, I basically do anything that’s creative. I’ve been a writer (documentaries on television, published book, published poet, etc), a publisher (Chinbeard Books Ltd), an actor (mostly on stage but a lot of voiceover work and the odd foray into the limelight), a director/producer (I just find projects easier to do if I sort them myself!), a musical tart (writing and performing comedy songs, not-comedy songs and, at one time, spending nearly a decade being Elwood in a 10-piece Blues Brothers tribute I managed), an improviser (my monthly comedy show has returned after a little break, to take a year-long residency in Cheltenham at The Playhouse) and an impressario (I have run The OFFSTAGE Theatre Group since 1993 and we’ve toured here and overseas with many original and ‘classic’ productions). It all sounds highly egotistical but, in a nutshell, my life has been geared to make people happy. I love that. It’s not for me, though of course it does make me happy too, but knowing an audience is having a good time – in comedy or in drama or in music – really fuels me. So, I try not to have an ego. If I do, I certainly keep it in my back pocket.

Have you always been a ‘creative’ type?

Yes. See above. Ahem. At school, I was known for writing ‘too long stories’ (can stories be ‘too long’? I don’t think so). Often being given a subject and ending up finishing my exercise book and asking for a new one to end it in, as well as illustrating them too. I think that began as early as Infant School, as did my love of standing up and making people laugh. I was probably about 4 or 5 when I was cast as Grumpy in the school play and I only had one line – “I am Grumpy!” – but I still recall the roar of laughter when I said it and the feeling that I wanted to do that again and again.

I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again

 What’s next for you after #KOTA has aired?

I’m currently putting together a tour for the revival of an old BBC Radio comedy series called ‘I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again’ (which starred John Cleese, Graeme Garden, Bill Oddie, Tim Brooke-Taylor, et all). We did a one-off version for charity, to see how it faired and it seemed to work well and attract a big audience. So, we’ve been kindly granted a longer licence by Graeme and Bill to tour with it. Plus, I’ve finally got time to get my publishing company back on track a bit. We’ve got a lot of books finished and ready to be released but I just haven’t had the time. Of course, I also need to be beaten up by my little daughters and make them laugh by falling over a lot.

Guest Post from Gilli Allan: Drawing a Naked Male Model can be Challenging

It’s my great pleasure to welcome Gilli Allan back to my blog today. As well as being an engaging, entertaining, astute and erudite writer, Gilli is an excellent artist, and (as I had the good fortune to discover at a recent conference), one of nicest people you could ever wish to meet.

Over to you Gilli,

All my books have grown out of the “What if…?” question. LIFE CLASS is no exception. Initially I had the title but no story, so I began to reflect on the accumulated experience of attending life drawing lessons over many years, and there was one incident that cried out to be revisited.

Before I arrived at art school, aged sixteen, I knew no boys, apart from my cousins. For me – a shy, gauche and inexperienced kid – becoming an art student was a very big deal. I’m sure it was a big deal for all of us in First Year Foundation. Within days, however, we’d relaxed with one another enough to become noisy and brash, and to show off. Then we had our first life class.

We all knew this weekly lesson was a part of the curriculum, so at least we weren’t taken by surprise. But knowing that something is going to happen does not necessarily make it easier to deal with. Imagine us, not yet entirely comfortable with one another, suddenly confronted by a very ample naked woman who we were expected to draw. The lesson passed in a stunned silence from the mixed class of very young students. The teacher made up for our unusual hush by raising his voice, as if suspecting we’d all turned deaf as well as mute.

“Observe the landmarks of her body and how they relate to one another,” he boomed. “Her crotch … her belly … her navel … her nipples!”

In retrospect, it was funny. At the time it was more agonising than amusing. I found it a challenge to even look at her without blushing, let alone to closely study those parts of her body I was too bashful to say out loud!

Despite the initial embarrassment I swiftly became used to studying a naked stranger. In fact, the life class rapidly became my favourite part of the week. I was captivated by the challenge of trying to interpret the human body in a drawing. When I left college I was unable to find a job in the art world, and for the next few years I was a depressed sales assistant in various London department stores. The aspect of art I missed the most was the life drawing, and I signed up for an evening class at the London School of Printing. I continued with this for a year, but slogging over to the Elephant and Castle on public transport after a day’s work, became a bind and I gave it up.

Although, at the time it felt like my life was trickling away, it wasn’t so long before I managed to secure my dream job as an illustrator in an advertising design studio. For a while I was very happy earning my living doing what I’d always wanted to do, but, as I became more accomplished, the work became more demanding and stressful. The workload was always erratic, and when a new commission did come in, it was typically wanted first thing the next morning. So when I had my son, I was content to take a break from commercial art. Now at home full-time, I revisited my teenage hobby of writing, and I also signed up for another life drawing class. Baby-sitting responsibility was my husband’s for one night a week, enabling me to do something just for me.

On that first evening I set out, feeling excited and tense. I had the directions and, as I drove over to the school in Wandsworth, I rehearsed in my mind what faced me. I knew that my life drawing skills would be rusty, I’d not employed them for years, but there was something else on my mind.   ‘Life’ models are predominantly female. The male model is a far rarer species, although not unknown. At college, over a decade earlier, we’d occasionally had a male model but, maybe to spare the blushes of the very young class, they’d always worn boxers or posing pouches. (One old fellow always wore his black beret, as well!) Surely these days, in an adult class, a male model would be stark naked, I reasoned. My tension about the evening ahead ratcheted up a few more notches when I couldn’t find the school. I must have been ten or fifteen minutes late when I eventually burst into the studio.

Everyone turned to look at me. The teacher was male. All the students were male. And – lying stretched out sideways on a mattress, his head on his hand – the entirely naked model was male. Wanting to disrupt proceedings as little as possible, I grabbed the first empty spot I saw. I didn’t think about the position I’d chosen until I’d sat down on the donkey (a wooden bench with an adjustable front flap), unwrapped my drawing pad, and raised my head. Everyone else had arranged themselves in a semi-circle behind or to the sides of the model. I was the only one with a totally full-frontal view. I looked at him, and he looked at me……….

You will find a fairly accurate account of what happened next at the start of Chapter Three of LIFE CLASS. I have given the experience to my heroine, Dory, who is a novice artist attending her first life drawing class. She is no shrinking violet but she finds it an unsettling experience. It unsettled me at the time, but I didn’t allow the incident to put me off.

I attended this particular class for a couple of years and we never had the same model again. Then I changed to another, a daytime class with a crèche. And throughout the years since, I’ve continued to attend life classes wherever I’ve lived. I don’t do life drawing because it’s easy. Sometimes it is, but often it’s hard. It can feel almost impossible – particularly if there’s a weirdo model! But, thankfully, they’re the exception not the rule. Despite the failures and the frustrations of the discipline, I am drawn back , again and again, trying to capture the mass, the angles, the points of balance, the fall of light and shade on that most intriguing of all subjects – the human body.

They must uncover the past – and the truths that come with it – before they can make sense of the present and navigate a new path into the future.

Biography

Gilli Allan started to write in childhood, a hobby only abandoned when real life supplanted the fiction. Gilli didn’t go to Oxford or Cambridge but, after just enough exam passes to squeak in, she attended Croydon Art College.

She didn’t work on any of the broadsheets, in publishing or television. Instead she was a shop assistant, a beauty consultant and a barmaid before landing her dream job as an illustrator in advertising. It was only when she was at home with her young son that Gilli began writing seriously. Her first two novels were quickly published, but when her publisher ceased to trade, Gilli went independent.

Over the years, Gilli has been a school governor, a contributor to local newspapers, and a driving force behind the community shop in her Gloucestershire village. Still a keen artist, she designs Christmas cards and has begun book illustration. Gilli is particularly delighted to have recently gained a new mainstream publisher – Accent Press. LIFE CLASS is the third book to be published in the three book deal.

What inspired you to write your book?

The inspiration for the book came after my husband and I moved from London to a small Suffolk Village and were amazed to discover a drag competition in the annual village horticultural fete – a tradition that apparently dated back years….

As an actor my husband – a straight talking Glaswegian – was coerced into entering and joined a sorry line up of five – a local farmer – an ex copper – the guy who owned the village shop – the butcher and paper boy!

Whoever won the show organised the following year -my husband won and it started me thinking -What would happen if some real life drag queens happened upon this small village competition? What would be the consequence if San Francisco met Suffolk?

At that time many country villages were in danger of losing their identity – local PO’s were closing – pubs were shutting down – and of course the local shops were losing out to the supermarkets….

I grew up in a small town and loved the community spirit and like many others in the village was keen to preserve it.

Obviously I did not have to do much research into village life having lived there – but I did have to research drag queens! Not a world I was particularly familiar with……

Accompanied by my husband ( who frankly enjoyed himself far too much!) we spent two weeks in San Francisco – hanging out with the drag queens – watching the shows – listening to their incredible stories and most surprisingly seeing how much they do for their community…

It was a fascinating – if somewhat exhausting couple of weeks – we were welcomed with open arms and I keep in touch with many of them… I cannot wait to go back…. so I guess I really need to start the sequel!

Do you prefer to plot your story or just go with the flow?

I did plot the book – but only very loosely.

I like to know roughly where I am going but I also like to have the freedom to allow the characters to grow and develop and surprise me… which they did on several occasions.

I have a wall full of large A4 sheets of paper on which I write various ideas..in various different colours – for example in the case of ‘Life’s A Drag’ – green was for Suffolk and the characters who lived there and pink was the obvious choice for San Francisco !

On the advice of novelist Veronica Henry I also use a ‘mood board’ – simply a cork board on which I pin photos- clippings – pictures – articles – anything that helps me relate to the story – it may sound a bit strange… but I find it really does help me focus …

What is your writing regime?

Re my writing regime…. I try to get up early and do a couple of hours before the day kicks off at 9.00am!

Sometimes that happens sometimes it doesn’t!

I live in SW France and we own Chez-Castillon – a large eighteenth century town house where we organise courses & retreats in painting /photography and creative writing – our days are hugely busy.. and it can be difficult to find time … so getting up early is a necessity if I want to get words down – and even though sometimes it is a effort to get up – I do enjoy my early morning sessions – when there are no interruptions – I drink gallons of strong coffee – munch on the occasional biscuit -talk my ideas through with the dog and watch the sun rise…

And I am very fortunate because we have some wonderful authors coming out here who always inspire and help me.

What excites you the most about your book?

What excites me most about my book is that is does not really fit any genre – it is fairly unique – it is optimistic but does have some deeper undercurrents.

I like the fact that it deals with two very different communities who come together to help each other – and although at first they seem worlds apart it soon becomes clear that appearances are not everything and human connections can surprise us.

Bio

Author Janie Millman was an actress for twenty-five years, appearing in the West End, on UK and World-wide Tours, on television and film. Her least-recognised role was as Leonardo the Ninja Turtle. Since 2009, she and her husband have lived in south-west France where they run Chez Castillon in an eighteenth-century house which provides an idyllic setting for painting, photography and creative-writing courses. She contracted breast cancer a couple of years ago and was inspired to write a popular blog: ‘Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow’ which sparked an interest in wild and unusual wigs, which probably helped when writing the Drag Queen characters.

Guest Blog from Kathryn Joyce: A for Author, B for Book, and C for Challenge.

One of the most wonderful things about my job as a writer is that I get to meet a huge variety of amazing people. A few weeks ago I was at a book and art sale in Taunton, when I me an artist who concentrates on the painting of cows- yes, cows! We got chatting, and during the course of our conversation I discovered that her mum had started to write. So, please let me introduce you to the talented Kathryn Joyce…

Thank you very much, Jenny, for inviting me to be a guest on your blog and talk about my writing journey.

The novel started in earnest about seven years ago when I was having coffee with a friend. I was, frankly, in a bit of a rut. We (my husband, David, and I) had just returned from a year long placement doing voluntary work in Pakistan (with VSO, [Voluntary Service Overseas]) and wondering if another placement was to be on the cards.

The coffee friend is a natural problem solver; she can’t resist solutions. ‘Get a job,’ she suggested then changed tack as she saw my look of incredulity. ‘I know what you should do’, she said, ‘Write a book – you’d be good at that’ (note, challenge number one).

Her idea that I ‘might be good at that’ came from pre-blog newsletters that David and I had been writing about our time in Pakistan and during a previous placements in West Africa. I’d loved writing them and I suddenly realised they were great sources for a book. The first question (of many, I was to find out) was what would I write about? Well, it wouldn’t be about me, that was for sure. I’d heard many people say they’d write a book one day – the first word, it seemed, would be ‘I’ and the last, ‘me’! If I was going to write a book, I decided, it would have to be one I would want to read, which meant realistic fiction written in good, poetic prose (challenge number two), and it would have to explore real issues, genuine dilemmas and unexpected solutions.

Seven years later the book has evolved. Set partly in England and partly in Pakistan it tells the story of a young couple, a catastrophic mistake and a disastrous misunderstanding. And, I’ve been told, there are some memorable lines. The fact that it’s a now real book – as opposed to a manuscript – continues to be a great surprise to me. As is the discovery that people appear to like it. Wow!

Now I’ve got the writing bug a second novel is in the air (challenge number three), and in the meantime, I’m writing short stories. Whilst the sun shines (metaphorically if not actually) I’m a star! Well, a very minor one. I’ve a story shortlisted in The Eyelands International competition that is to be published in an anthology in January, and I’ve ‘appeared’ on radio, in newspapers, in blog interviews, at book groups, community groups, and book-signing engagements (note challenges four to nine). I wonder how many authors have done a book signing at Waitrose. It surprised me how many people wanted to treat themselves to an author signed book to cheer a chilly Saturday morning. How did I get to do a book-signing at Waitrose (challenge number ten)? I asked them!

Author Bio: It’s been a few years since I left Hull as a teenager, but it was in this city of my birth and education that an English teacher at Wolfreton Comprehensive School, Miss Wilson, cultivated my childhood love of reading and writing.  I wonder if she’s still around! For her, I wrote essays with verve!

But, a few years passed after school and life got seriously grown-up. As a mum with a full time career there was little time for literature other than reading a chapter or two before sleep took over.

Then came a change of direction. My children went off to university – and so did I. After three years of reading psychology at Leicester I had new choices and inspired by a daughter who had worked in Vietnam, my husband and joined VSO. Firstly we worked in West Africa, then Pakistan, and later, Viet Nam too. VSO had an advertising slogan around that time which said ‘What did you do last year, and will you remember it for the rest of your life?’ For us, immersion in these cultures brought exciting new experiences almost every day and the urge to record and share them with loved ones led to a new phase of writing that has continued beyond expectations. And the newsletters are still around. Maybe, one day, they’ll emerge again, in another book or two. After all, I’ve got the bug.

Guest Interview with Lynne Shelby: French Kissing

When I was at the Romantic Novelist Association Conference a few weeks ago I was lucky enough to meet quite a few fellow Accent authors. One of them was the delightful Lynne Shelby, who kindly agreed to be interviewed.

What inspired you to write your book?

I was travelling back to London from Paris on the Eurostar, and a Frenchman sitting across the aisle spent the journey telephoning his English friends telling them that he, François, was coming to London and suggesting they meet up. Unfortunately none of his friends wanted to see him. By the time we reached Kent, I was feeling very sorry for François, and I’d also had an idea for a story about a Frenchman who comes to England and is met off the train by an English girl who is very pleased to see him. These characters became Alexandre and Anna in French Kissing.

Do you model any of your characters after people you know? If so, do these people see themselves in your characters?

I don’t model the characters on people I know, but some of the incidents in French Kissing have happened to people I know – I do make sure that I’ve disguised them enough that no-one recognizes themselves!

What type of research did you have to do for your book?

As French Kissing is set in contemporary London and Paris, most of my research was things like checking street names, and making sure I put well-known buildings in the right places! The most enjoyable bit of research was going to Paris for a few days – it’s one of my favourite cities – and visiting the places that my hero, Alexandre, takes my heroine, Anna.

Which Point of View do you prefer to write in and why?

I write in the first person because I find this lets me really get inside the head of my heroine.

Do you prefer to plot your story or just go with the flow?

When I start writing, I know the beginning and end of my story, but go with the flow in the middle. There seems to be a moment when the characters take over! Sometimes I do plot a chapter, if I know I need to get in a twist in the story at that particular point.

What is your writing regime?

I’d like to say that I get up at 6.00 am, and after going for a run, write 2,000 words before breakfast. In reality, I do usually sit down at my desk by about 9.00 and aim for about 1,000 words before a late lunch.

What excites you the most about your book?

French Kissing is my debut novel, and I’ve found everything about getting published, from the moment I won the Accent Press and Woman Writing Competition, incredibly exciting. The thought that my story is being read is wonderful – it really is a dream come true.

I’m delighted to welcome fellow Accent Press author, Marie Laval, back to my site to talk about her new release, The Lion’s Embrace. I have to say, it sounds fascinating.

Thank you very much Jenny for welcoming me on your blog today to talk about my latest release. THE LION’S EMBRACE is my second historical romance and takes place mostly in North Africa, in Algeria to be exact, in 1845. Lucas Saintclair is hired as a guide by Harriet Montague to rescue her father, a British Museum archaeologist, who she believes was captured by a gang of Tuaregs in the far South of the country.

Writing THE LION’S EMBRACE was a fascinating process, not only because I got to fall in love with my hero (I know, it sounds very, very corny, but it’s true!), but also because I discovered the beautiful landscapes Lucas and Harriet travelled through on their way to Tamanrasset, and the culture of the people they encountered. One particular group of people are at the centre of the plot: the Tuaregs, also called ‘The People of the Veil’ or the ‘Blue Men of the Desert’ because of the indigo veil all men have to wear from around the age of fifteen.

I surrounded myself with photos of the Sahara, of oases and the magnificent Hoggar mountain range. I read Tuareg poems and stories and listened to music so that I could get a real ‘feel’ for the place and the people since I couldn’t travel there myself.

One song in particular caught my imagination and I played it over and over again as I wrote THE LION’S EMBRACE. It’s a modern song and I have no idea what they are singing about, but I find the melody poignant and haunting, especially the monochord violin, the imzad, which can be heard throughout.

The imzad is a traditional Tuareg instrument only played by women. It is at the heart of the Tuareg culture and society because of its link to the Achak, the code of honour every Tuareg must live by. Those who stray from the path and commit dishonourable acts are said to have lost the ability to ‘hear the imzad’ in their heart and are therefore cast out of their family and their tribe.

As they travel across the Sahara desert, Lucas Saintclair and Harriet Montague spend a few days with a Tuareg caravan. Every evening, they sit under the stars and listen to musicians playing the imzad and to stories and poems. The story-teller pulls out round pebbles out of his ‘bag of tales’, which is a skin pouch. Each pebble represents a different story and he tells the stories in the order the pebbles were drawn from the bag.

This is an excerpt from THE LION’S EMBRACE when Lucas and Harriet are at the Tuareg camp. The tale is based on a genuine Tuareg story.

The women played their instruments all along, drawing long, monochord sounds that at times sounded almost like laments and perfectly matched the mood of the audience, silent and attentive under the starry sky.

            By the end of the evening, Harriet shivered with cold. Lucas wrapped his arm around her shoulders to keep her warm.

‘The brave is reaching the end of his journey,’ he translated, his voice low and a little hoarse. ‘After wandering in the desert for weeks, he finally finds his beloved’s camp, but it is empty under the stars. Only the cruel wind answers his prayers, and as the cool moonlight kisses his lips, the vast spaces full of solitude chill his heart. So he lies on the sand and waits to die.’ He paused. ‘And that’s love for you. Brings you nothing but pain.’

            Despite his slightly mocking tone, the words made her dreamy.

            ‘It’s beautiful, and so sad.’ She found his hand, squeezed a little. ‘Love isn’t all pain, you know. It can be the most wonderful feeling in the world.’

            She should know.

An Interview with Charlotte Philips: Access All Areas

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing the lovely Charlotte Philips. So why not grab a cuppa, grab some cake, and come and put your feet up with us for five minutes…

What inspired you to write your book?

Access All Areas is part of a series of five books set in the same fictional boutique hotel in London, so my story brainstorming had to tie into that setting. Over the course of writing the books, the Lavington Hotel and its staff and guests have developed and now I can almost walk down the luxury hallways in my mind! I loved the idea of having a celebrity stay at the hotel with all the mayhem that could cause, and when I thought around that a bit more I came up with the idea of having a photographer as my heroine, desperate to sneak a photo of the star to sell. The hero is the Head of Security at the hotel, so he’s directly in conflict with her. Unfortunately a paparazzi photographer isn’t the most sympathetic of characters, so instead I made Anna a portrait photographer who urgently needs money to save her house. She normally does school or wedding pictures, and is completely out of her depth, plus the idea of taking unsolicited pictures doesn’t sit well with her conscience, but she’s desperate and has run out of other options

Do you prefer to plot your story or just go with the flow?

I am absolutely a plotter, and the thought of just sitting down with nothing more than an idea to go on fills me with horror! I am in awe of people who can do that. The more books I’ve written, the more I have gravitated to planning rather than going with the flow. In my early books there were moments where I crashed my head on the desk in despair because I’d written myself into a corner or I simply couldn’t see a way forward. On one occasion I had to rewrite the first third of a book because it just didn’t work, and that was a horrible, draining experience. I now spend lots of time on the planning of my books. By the time I start writing I have a full scene list, character charts, biographies, timelines, the list goes on. It isn’t set in stone – sometimes ideas come to me along the way that work better than my original plan, but as a general ballpark guide it works for me. I like the security that it provides and I believe it helps me write faster and better.

What is your writing regime?

I work on my writing Monday to Friday, although I may do bits and pieces over the weekend. Generally my routine is to drop my youngest daughter at school and spend the next two hours on my writing. After that other things have to take over. If I’m writing draft rather than planning or editing I aim for 2k words a day on weekdays, and that’s generally achievable for me in the time I have. I fit in social media wherever I can, often I’ll tweet from the car outside school or check Facebook while I’m cooking dinner. It’s all about juggling, just as it is for everyone with a family or commitments.

What excites you the most about your book?

The release of Access All Areas, and the final book in the series, Meet Me at the Honeymoon Suite, which comes out next month (June 25th), means my Do Not Disturb series is finally complete. It’s going to be so lovely to have the full set of five books available in time for summer!

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

I’m just starting to write my very first single title. Planning is in full swing and I’m currently buried in post-it notes and character charts. It’s a very exciting move forward for me but also a bit scary. Wish me luck!

Interview with Teresa F. Morgan: One Fine Day

Today I’m interviewing fellow writer, Teresa Morgan, about her latest book, One Fine Day.

Time to pop the kettle on, and enjoy five minutes with your feet up, while you join in our chatter…

What inspired you to write your book?

One Fine Day is inspired by a mix of things really. I’ve always been fascinated how celebrities can just split up. Especially those that get together, marry and divorce in the space of a year – or less! Having been through a divorce, I know it’s not easy, but us ‘normal’ folk have the financial worry which makes our decision to break up harder, whereas if both parties are rich and famous, they don’t have that financial insecurity to face. And so I wonder if this lessens their effort to work at a relationship. Also, I love Superman/Clark Kent and wondered what sort of person would need to go under a disguise to find their perfect partner… and decided a heart-throb actor (who looks a lot like Bradley Cooper) would be a perfect candidate.

One Fine Day

Do you model any of your characters after people you know? If so, do these people see themselves in your characters?

Steve’s sister, Ruby, in One Fine Day is bossy and swears a lot… she’s very much like me. I’m not sure I like to make my characters like people I know… I might steal a name but usually I’ll use characters off the television to be safe. A fictional character based on another fictional character.

Which Point of View do you prefer to write in and why?

I prefer writing in third person so that I can fluctuate between the hero and the heroine. I always do this with a scene change though, so the reader isn’t hopping from one head to another. But I do like to give the reader the hero’s perspective and not always the heroine’s. In fact, One Fine Day is predominately the hero’s point of view.

Do you prefer to plot your story or just go with the flow?

Writing romance you know there has to be a happy ending. I usually have ideas of things I need to put into my story, but I am probably a bit of a “just go with the flow” type writer. I’m not very good at plotting my story, I just want to get on with writing it.

What is your writing regime?

Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays are my free days, so I try to write in those days when the boys are at school. I’m giving myself a target of around 2000 words a week… but really, I like to achieve a 1000 words a day. I also have to fit in exercise, housework, and catching up with friends, but I’m trying to do more during the day so that evenings I relax and can use as my social media and blogging time.

I live in sunny Weston-super-Mare, trying to hold onto my Surrey accent where I was born and bred. For years I persevered with boring jobs, until my two boys joined my nest. In an attempt to find something to work around them, and to ensure I never endured full time boredom again, I found writing. I am at my happiest baking cakes, putting proper home cooked dinners on the table (whether the kids eat them or not), reading a good romance, or creating a touch of escapism with heroes readers will fall in love with.

Guest Post from T S Harvey: A Writing Life

It’s always good to have a first time visitor to my blog, and today I’m delighted to welcome the lovely T S Harvey, to give us a potted history of her books and her life!

The Author

I was always an avid reader as a child and English always my favourite subject at school. In addition to my writing I’m a breeder and exhibitor of pedigree dogs, having won Best of Breed at Crufts in 2011 with my English Toy Terrier, Ch. Kadaz Authentic (or Hattie as we knew her).

I’ve appeared on several quiz shows over the past ten years and won The Weakest Link in 2005. My mum recently took part in Bargain Hunt and this should be aired later in the year.

The Books

The Tin Man        

My first completed novel was a family saga sent in Texas in 1946, coming right through to present day. This was self-published through Createspace and has just undergone a make-over so to speak and the revised version is once again available on Amazon.

Written in the first person and narrated by Michael, it follows his life through its ups and downs, from being orphaned at 4 years old, experiencing abuse at the hands of the matron and staff at the Children’s home, his joy at being fostered and becoming a ‘brother’ and ultimately a carer to his foster sister.

In time I plan to write prequels to The Tin Man from the perspective of several of the characters in this book, including Carl Ryan, the Tin Man of the title.

Four Seasons:

The first book in the four part series is Winter of Discontent

The initial inspiration for the Four Seasons series came from my daughters and my eldest grand-daughter. Having successfully self-published my first novel they asked me to write something in the Young Adult / Supernatural genre which was more on the lines of the sort of books that they read. I gave a lot of thought to the content / characters that I would like to ‘work’ with and came to the conclusion that there was no point going down the Vampire route as that has been done so often, and in many cases so well, that I didn’t want to find myself competing with the likes of Stephenie Meyer for bookcase space. Having decided to go with Warlock / Witches as the framework for the story I also decided not to go with the fantasy options, dragons, goblins and the like. Having finely honed the genre and direction, I did a lot of research online into Witch folklore and some of the results it produced gave me some really useful ideas, many of which I employed in the storyline.

The second book in the series is Spring of Fools which is due out on the 9th April.

The Content

Covens:

The Moirai: These were a powerful group of witches, along with the Grenae, said to exist in medieval times. This helped give me some background ideas as well as some future plot lines.

Segans / Kintarians: In folklore these are also powerful groups of Warlocks. The Kintarian is said to be a shape shifter which also provided me with further inspiration for the characters that appear in this book and in the forthcoming, Four Seasons: Spring of Fools; Book 2 in the series.

Character Names:

Having already inspired me to write in this genre I decided to name my lead female character, Sarah, after my eldest grand-daughter.

I wanted to choose names for male leads that would sit comfortably in European countries as the history of the characters goes way back. Having chosen Erik (I felt it sounded cooler with a ‘K’ and more European) as the main male lead I then had to find a surname. Enter Google translate. I’d decided that his family history would be rooted in / around Germany so I Googled ‘Magic’ and ta dah… Zauber.

‘Physical’ Content:

I made a conscious decision before I started to write this book that I would include some references of a sexual nature as even though the basis of the story is supernatural the characters could quite easily be the girl or boy you sit next to in History. Given that, it made sense that students at the age Sarah and Erik are, would talk about, and in many cases, participate in sexual activity. None of it is written for shock value; however, Book 2 moves it up a notch which I think is believable given the difficulties and frustrations of the characters in this book.

‘Guest stars’:

I consider myself blessed for having a couple of celebrities willing to lend their name to some of the story lines in this book. I’ve been friends with Jamie Afro’s mom, Jeanne, for some years now and when I needed a Rock Singer for a side story I approached her to ask him if he’d mind if I used him rather than invent one. Jeanne knew I wouldn’t take any cheap shots and Jamie was happy to oblige. There is another section in the story that called for a singer in the US so I approached one of my favourites, Broadway star Telly Leung. Telly was happy for me to use his name providing I sent him a draft of the content for his approval, which I did, and he sent me a lovely message of support back wishing me luck in finding a publisher. He also sent a note of congratulations when I told him that Accent Press had picked it up.

Writer’s block:

I was lucky enough not to have any periods when the story didn’t flow for me. I think a lot of that is down to my style of writing.   I often change direction in my story telling but I always know where my story ends. I look at this as my ‘Writers GPS’. It is like punching in the end destination for me; as long as I know where I’m headed I can cope with the detours on route.

I sometimes need to give myself a bit of a kick to get started but once I do I commit to getting it finished above everything else going on in my life. I think I’d be concerned that if I did call a halt for any reason then I might not pick it up again. This happened to me back in 1987 when I first started to write. I had to stop to do some research, which was a lot harder back then without the internet, and when I couldn’t find what I was looking for, and couldn’t find another direction for the story without it, I just stopped. Hopefully, one day, I’ll pick it back up and start again; but not until I’ve completed this series!

Marketing:

I’ve been fortunate to secure several marketing opportunities. Being asked to talk at my old comprehensive school was a real highlight. I’ve done several book signing events, a few appearances on Cannock Radio and a slot on BBC WM Afternoon Show on 9th April.

I was invited to be interviewed for Cuppa TV (BIG Centre TV) – Regional Lifestyle programme with host Monica Price. This aired on 23rd March and I’m hoping to get a copy to link to my Facebook and Twitter pages soon.
