Abi’s House: A Very Special Dedication

Regular visitors to this web site will remember that a few months ago I was privileged to be asked by the fantastic charity, CLIC Sargent, to take part in their Get in Character Auction.

This was an incredible opportunity to bid to have a character given the name of your choice in a novel written by some of the most  popular writer’s in the country – so you can imagine how honoured I was to be asked to donate a name!

The character I donated to the auction was a Cornish potter from my latest novel, Abi’s House – which is now out for sale.

Abi's House_edited-1

I was so excited- but also nervous! What if the winning bid was for a name I really didn’t like? After all, names are very important. The wrong name for a character can make or break a story. I need not have worried though! As luck would have it, the winner of the auction wanted to donate a name that fitted my character perfectly.

CLIC logoI have dedicated Abi’s House to the group who kindly bid for the right to have a character in my book…

Dedication

A special dedication and thank you must go to the Dennyside Bowling Association. This UK-wide bowling club-based charity was founded by Leonard Denny in 1935. In 2014 they raised over £40,000 for various good causes. Recently they bid in the CLIC Sargent Get in Character Auction. Dennyside’s winning bid entitled them to choose a name for one of the characters in Abi’s House. So, please let me introduce you to Jacob Denny – a perfect name for a Cornish potter, and a generous tribute to Dennyside’s founder.

My thanks again to CLIC Sargent, everyone who bid in the auction, and to the Dennyside Bowling Club- in particular John, Ken, and Brian for putting the bid forward.

Coming VERY Soon: Abi’s House

It seems so long ago since I first put pen to paper, and drafted the initial outline for my new novel, Abi’s House. Yet, at the same time, it feels as if no time at all has passed, and suddenly here we are, with only days to go until my Cornish adventure of life, friendship, love and hope is launched onto the e-selves and bookshop shelves of the nation!!

Abi's House_edited-1

Here’s the blurb!

Newly widowed at barely thirty, Abi Carter is desperate to escape the Stepford Wives-style life that Luke, her late husband, had been so keen for her to live.

Abi decides to fulfil a lifelong dream. As a child on holiday in a Cornwall she fell in love with a cottage – the prophetically named Abbey’s House. Now she is going to see if she can find the place again, relive the happy memories … maybe even buy a place of her own nearby?

On impulse Abi sets off to Cornwall, where a chance meeting in a village pub brings new friends Beth and Max into her life. Beth, like Abi, has a life-changing decision to make. Max, Beth’s best mate, is new to the village. He soon helps Abi track down the house of her dreams … but things aren’t quite that simple. There’s the complicated life Abi left behind, including her late husband’s brother, Simon – a man with more than friendship on his mind … Will Abi’s house remain a dream, or will the bricks and mortar become a reality?

I’ve been extremely lucky to have already received some great 5 star pre-release reviews for Abi’s House

Pre-release reviews

“When Abi is suddenly widowed at 30 years old she realises that she has become a shell – modelled into the wife her dead husband wanted her to be and not the person she wants to be.

Feeling suffocated in Surrey by the ‘lifestyle’ and her In Laws Abi up sticks and heads to Cornwall to find Abbey House – a place her family found years before whilst on holiday. Once in Sennan Abi quickly makes new friends and soon realises she has found the one place she wants to call home.

Jenny’s style of writing is wonderful.  You can feel the sand in your toes, the gentle waves lapping at your feet, the sun and the wind and smell the Fish and Chips!  It was whilst reading this book that I realised I really missed a good old fashioned pub garden – we just don’t have them where I live.  Jenny’s stories always draw me in, I get so engrossed in and involved with the characters.  It’s like you are there.  I want to live in a Jenny Kane book!

It is over a week since I read the book and I just loved it so much…I feel like I have lost some friends since I finished reading it….”

***

Reading a Jenny Kane book is like opening a journal by a much loved friend. I’m spirited away into a world of warm, friendly and interesting people. To places that I not only want to visit but actually live in. Shops, cafés and pubs that I want to be my locals and life that I want to experience and be a part of. Abi’s House gives you all of these feelings and left me with a huge smile on my face and a glowing in my heart. More of this wonderfulness please!!”

So why not escape with Abi Carter into the beautiful Penwith corner of Cornwall? Let the sea breeze calm you, the fish and chips sustain you, and the adventure unfold…

OUT NOW!!- Romancing Robin Hood

Today’s the day!!

Romancing Robin Hood, my second full length novel under the name Jenny Kane, hits the e-shelves today!! (Paperback coming soon)

Switching from the modern romance (or lack thereof), of Grace Harper, to the fourteenth century tale of Mathilda de Twyford (the fictional heroine Grace has created within her own novel), Romancing Robin Hood is a tale of friendship, romance, the medieval criminal nobility, and a teenage obsession with Robin Hood…

Romancing Robin Hood

Romancing Robin Hood – Blurb

Dr Grace Harper has loved the stories of Robin Hood ever since she first saw them on TV as a girl. Now, with her fortieth birthday just around the corner, she’s a successful academic in Medieval History, with a tenured position at a top university.

But Grace is in a bit of a rut. She’s supposed to be writing a textbook on a real-life medieval gang of high-class criminals – the Folvilles – but she keeps being drawn into the world of the novel she’s secretly writing – a novel which entwines the Folvilles with her long-time love of Robin Hood – and a feisty young girl named Mathilda, who is the key to a medieval mystery…

Meanwhile, Grace’s best friend Daisy – who’s as keen on animals as Grace is on the Merry Men – is unexpectedly getting married, and a reluctant Grace is press-ganged into being her bridesmaid. As Grace sees Daisy’s new-found happiness, she starts to re-evaluate her own life. Is her devotion to a man who may or may not have lived hundreds of years ago really a substitute for a real-life hero of her own? It doesn’t get any easier when she meets Dr Robert Franks – a rival academic who Grace is determined to dislike but finds herself being increasingly drawn to…

I’m off to Abi’s House!

I’m totally chuffed and madly delighted to be able to announce that Accent have contracted me to write another novel!!

Ever since I finished writing my last novel Romancing Robin Hood (due out until late August), I have been very busy ‘being’ Kay Jaybee, putting together a few short erotic stories for a handful of forthcoming anthologies- but now it’s Jenny’s turn again.

KayJayBee-27

Jenny Kane book number 4 (novel number 3), is to be called Abi’s House, and will be out late spring/early summer 2015!

Or it will be- if I hurry up and get on with it!!!

Abi’s House will take the lead character, Abi Carter, away from the life that her late husband (Luke), thrust upon her, and on search for the life she’d always wanted…

Sennen, Cornwall

Sennen, Cornwall

From the “executive wifeness” of the outskirts of London, to the artistic escape of Sennen and the dramatic coastline of Cornwall, Abi discovers far more than she bargained for…making new friends along the way.

Right- I’m not saying ANY more for now…but I promise I’ll share more news soon…

Blurb Reveal- Romancing Robin Hood

I’m delighted to be able to announce that the writing of my next Jenny Kane, Romancing Robin Hood, novel is well under way!

KayJayBee-27

This time I’m taking a step away from the Pickwicks’ Coffee Shop setting in Richmond, that has been the home to my last two works (Another Cup of Coffee and Another Cup of Christmas), and am moving northwards to the Midlands of England- specifically Leicester, Nottingham, and Sherwood forest…

Part contemporary romance, and part historical mystery adventure, Romancing Robin Hood should (I hope!!), raise a smile, warm the heart, and keep you on the edge of your seat all at the same time!!!

More news soon!

Happy reading,

Why Robin Hood?

Once upon a time, when the world was young, I was a very shy teenager.

I was also a bit- shall we say unusual? I suspect the words ‘odd’ and ‘eccentric’ would be more accurate, but I’ll let you make your own mind up on that!!!

I never did the pop or film star crush thing. Never had pictures of Duran Duran or Wham on my wall. Adam Ant didn’t look up at me from my pencil case, and I did not wake up to see a life sized poster of Morrissey’s backside complete with gladioli (or whatever flower it was) sticking out of his backside!!

Nor was I into the Pac Man craze (I am so giving my age away here!), and the background to Manic Minor drove me nuts! I didn’t buy Jackie, or indulge in spending my money on Cosmopolitan.

It wasn’t that I didn’t like music or playing the odd game of tennis on the Atari- but I had a different sort of fascination.

RH- RoS 2

Cast of Robin of Sherwood

Robin Hood!!

I know what you’re thinking- you’re thinking that I had a crush on Jason Connery or Michael Praed- but nope. Sorry- neither of those lovely boys are my type at all.

It all started because I was ill for ages and ages when I was 14. I missed a lot of school. But as always in life, timing is everything- and I was saved by an instant and unshakeable love for the series of Robin of Sherwood that was being aired on ITV at the time. It was the third series- I hadn’t seen either of the first two. (I have now- lots!) As I was at home so much, my parents rented one of those new fangled video recorders from Radio Rentals so I could record stuff and watch it when I liked. (Thanks Mum and Dad- still grateful for that!!)

The VCR arrived the same day as the episode of Robin of Sherwood called Adam Bell was aired- I recorded it and watched it 8 times the next day- and then again, and again and again. Now- over 20 years later- I can still quote the script!! (Okay- that’s nothing to be proud of- see- I’m a bit odd!!)

It wasn’t the tight tights that had captured my heart though- it was the story. The whole story. All of it. I wanted to know everything- EVERYTHING- that could possibly be known about Robin Hood. No film, book (nonfiction or fiction), was safe from me.

RH- E Flynn

Errol Flynn- The Adventures of Robin Hood

My walls disappeared under posters of RH- any posters- from Errol Flynn, to Richard Greene, to the statue up in Nottingham, to the gorgeous Ray Winstone who played Will Scarlet (Okay- you have me there- I had – still do- have a ‘thing’ for Ray Winstone- there is such a twinkle in those eyes!!!)

The interest became an obsession (In RH not Ray Winstone). When I was better my parents took me to Sherwood- I learnt archery, I read medieval political poems and ballads- I wanted to know the truth- did he exist or didn’t he?

I did a project on RH for my A’ level History. Then I went to university and did a specialist course in Medieval Castle and Ecclesiastical Architecture…I was a medieval junky!! It seemed only natural to do a PhD on the subject- and that is exactly what I did!

Robin Hood Statue- Nottingham

Robin Hood Statue- Nottingham

By this time of course, I was pretty certain how and why the RH legend had begun- but I wanted to know who had influenced it into the form we know today, and how the real recorded crimes and daily life of the thirteenth and fourteenth century had affected those stories… (forget thinking RH was around with Richard I or King John- it ain’ happening!!)

It was my PhD that taught me to write- (a tome of epic proportions that is still knocking around my old Uni library gathering dust, while e-versions of it are scattered around many American Universitys). Rather than finish off my love of RH- my PhD polished it to perfection!! (Although nothing could make me like the latest BBC series or the Russell Crowe film- both just made me want to scream they were so bad.)

Ray Winstone

I guess it was only a matter of time before I decided to write a novel about a Robin Hood obsessed historian…you have been warned!!!

Happy reading

EARLY PAPERBACK RELEASE!!!! Another Cup of Coffee Anyone??

YIPPEE!!!!!!  The paperback release of Another Cup of Coffee has been bought forward to 16th Sept in the UK, and 19th Sept in the US!!!

Although I have been writing for some time, and have had 16 solo erotic novels, anthologies and novellas published before, this novel feels like a major first for me!

I love writing as Kay, and the erotica world has been very kind to me- but I must confess to feeling quite different about Another Cup of Coffee– partly because the story is based on a decision I had to make once upon a time (I tell you about that another day if you are very good), and partly because of the marketing issue- it is just so easy to tell people about my new novel!!

KayJayBee-27

When you write erotica, you are preaching to the converted- to a small group of the population who love the genre. With romance, on some level, there is always the chance your work will appeal to everybody.

I love writing erotica- and it is a genre I really believe in- but forget 50 Shades- I’m talking real erotica, which is full of well crafted, well thought out, sexy stories. Some are mysteries, some thrillers, some crime based, others romantic, some emotional journeys- just like in any other branch of fiction.

The thing is though, in erotica you have to second guess people all the time. You can’t just stick up a poster up in a café or library advertising erotica for fear of offending, you can’t drop it in to conversation with people you don’t know well for the same reason- everything you say has to be judged on instinct. And to be honest- I’m okay with that- it is difficult and often frustrating, but I really don’t want to offend people – although to be honest, I don’t think  actually would if people stopped to read some, rather than assume they know what it’s going to be like.

Anyway- that’s an argument for Kay’s site- today I’m simply enjoying how lovely it is to be able to say, ‘I’ve written a novel called Another Cup of Coffee, can I put up a poster, can I read in the library, can I launch it at a National Trust house….” and not have to wonder what response I’ll get! It is a very freeing feeling!!

coffee and cake

So I’m raising a coffee to my first novel as Jenny- to all the lovely people who have bought it already, and the lovely reviews it’s already received- who knows, if I sell enough paperback and Kindle copies, I might get it in some bookshops!!
